Valuation and Authentication Service

Jabach offers various methods for testing and determining the value of precious metals as well as stones: This includes optical tests, weight and density, ultrasonic testing as well as chemical analysis.

The fineness or purity of precious metals e.g. gold (expressed in carats) plays an important role in determining value:

  1. Visual Tests:
Real gold usually has a hallmark indicating its fineness, e.g., 333, 585, 750, 995 or 999 / 1000. Real gold has a characteristic yellow hue.
  2. Weight and Density:
Real gold is heavier than many other metals because of its high density. Density can be calculated by measuring the volume of the gold piece in water.
  3. Ultrasonic Testing:
Non-destructive: This method uses ultrasonic waves to examine the internal structure of the gold piece. Ultrasonic testing can help identify gold or counterfeits, even if it’s coated with another metal.
  4. Acid Testing:
This test, which involves applying an acid to the gold piece, should only be performed by an experienced person. The acid test can help determine the gold alloy (karat value) and the authenticity of the gold.

Important: Be aware that there are replicas that imitate gold.
If a piece of jewelry is gold-plated, an acid test or scanning electron microscopy can help verify its authenticity. Some tests, such as ultrasonic testing, can have a penetration depth of only a few millimeters.

To determine a diamond’s value, consider the 4 Cs (Cut, Carat, Color, Clarity) and, if applicable, a certificate from a reputable institute such as GIA or IGI. For a professional appraisal, it is recommended to consult Jabach.

Precious stones e.g. diamonds and the 4 Cs with their meaning:

  1. Cut:
The cut influences how the diamond shines and sparkles. A good cut maximizes the refraction and reflection of light.
  2. Carat:
The diamond’s weight in carats is an important factor in its price. A larger diamond is generally more valuable.
  3. Color:
Diamonds can vary in color. The less color a diamond has, the higher its value. Colorless diamonds (D-F) are very rare and expensive.
  4. Clarity:
The clarity of a diamond is determined by the number and size of inclusions. A flawless diamond (no inclusions) is more valuable than one with many inclusions.

Important: Fog Test: A diamond conducts heat well. If you breathe warm air on the diamond and it immediately becomes clear, it is likely genuine. Laser Engraving: Some certified diamonds are laser-engraved with the certificate number, allowing for clear identification.

For an accurate valuation and authenticity assessment, it is recommended to consult Jabach for a reliable precious metal and stone analysis.
