Continuing A Legacy That Spans Over 400 Years
Eberhard Jabach (1618–1695), a German (later French Citizenship as well) trader, banker and collector was among the leading influential financial figures of the 17th century.

Born in Cologne, Germany, he took over the family business at an early age, which specialized in trading and banking. Upon moving to Paris, France, Jabach founded one of the city’s most important private banks – the “Caisse Jabach” – which granted loans, issued banknotes and had close ties to the French royal court.

In addition to banking, Jabach was involved in financing international trade, operated his own fleet of ships as well as served as director of the French East India Company (competitor to the English and Dutch East Indies trade). He secured stable sources of income through diversified investments in manufacturing operations, e.g. a fur and leather tannery.

His world-renowned art collection – including works by Raphael, Dürer and Leonardo – served not only as a representation, but also as a valuable asset portfolio. During financial crises, Jabach sold parts of his collection to Louis XIV for over 550,000 livres (equivalent value today of approximately 50 to 75 million euros) in order to create liquidity and consolidate investments. Louis XIV included the artworks in his “Cabinet du roi” and passed them on to the Louvre, which formed the basis of today’s museum.
